Resurrection. Mark 16.

Here's a place for you to write about this last chapter of Mark, and to reflect back on the entire gospel. How has this read through impacted your life, your thoughts, so far?

The women waited through the crucifixtion on Friday, through the day on Saturday, until sundown of the Sabbath to buy spices to anoint Jesus' body. An agonizing wait, yet one that might have given them purpose through the first hours of the grieving pain. My Bible's explanation section explains that this meant the women had no expectation of Jesus' resurrection. To me that implies their offering of anointing was unnecessary because the body would not stay dead. But surely it would have brought them comfort to care for Him, even if it wasn't right for them to seek closure on his death. The more I think of this the more I think it was appropriate of them to do because the resurrection was Jesus returning not to live in his earthly body but to finish His earthly ministry. He came back the King and was less human than He had left. Maybe it was fitting for his earthly body to go through the cultural goodbye. It was the second such anointing--recall Mark 14 when the poor woman anointed Jesus at Bethany prior to his arrest and death. Others criticized her actions, but Jesus called it a beautiful thing to have anointed his body for burial.

Yes, the women had no expectation of resurrection, or they wouldn't have done what they did. It was entirely appropriate, and I really appreciate your insight into how it would have helped the women endure their grief.
