Object lesson. Matthew 14.

This will be short, so you can read yesterday's post which was very late. Something that struck me this morning is how Herod is forced to do something he really doesn't want to do (kill John the Baptist) because of the oaths he made. Remember Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5 about oaths?

I want to add something in here so it isn't in the way of the main page. At the end of the story of John's beheading, his disciples take him away to bury him and then go tell Jesus. The NIV describes what happened next in this way:

"When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick."

As I read those words, compassion stirred in my own heart for Jesus, who after hearing about the death of John, went off to contemplate it. What thoughts and prayers must have gone through His mind at that time? And yet even in this, He only had a short time before the crush of expectant people was upon Him again. And it was out of this experience that He fed the 5,000.

I need to take some time to think upon these things.
